how matterhorn madness works
DETAILS
The ascent from basecamp to summit of the real Matterhorn is approximately 1600 metres. To achieve this in Thunder Bay, your team has to go up the 'Main' run at Mount Baldy 12 times in total in 3 hours or less (the descent will be along the 'Gold' run). Only the ascents count in the total ascent of 1600m. One ascent of Mt. Baldy is approx. 140m. Once one person summits, the next person will start at the bottom, so you don't have to wait for the first person to get back to basecamp in order for the second person to start their way up.
If you are planning to tackle this as a solo, 1. you rock and 2. your start time will be at 9:00 am and you will have 4 hours to complete the course.
If you have a large team of folks who are tackling this adventure and you think it might take you longer than 3 hours, you can also request to start at 9:00 am! A three hour time limit means that folks will consistently make it up the hill in 15 minutes or less.
1.ASSEMBLE YOUR TEAM
The level of your challenge is directly correlated to the number of people on your team. For example, if you have 2 people on your team, you need to sort out your ups between just two of you. If you have 4 people, you split the challenge between the four of you, 6 people between the six of you etc. Cumulatively, you will complete a vertical height of 1600 m (Hence, Matterhorn Basecamp to Summit).
*SOLOS - If you want to run this on your own, you are welcome to do so. Please write "solo" on your registration form where it asks for your Team Name. And, please make sure you can complete 12 ascents within 4 hours (or at least be happy with however many you complete after 4 hours!).
*TEAMS OF TWO - Yes - a team of two is awesome BUT you need to enlist a third person who will wait at the bottom and listen to the announcements for when it's time to go!
2. REGISTER - $50/person ($70 after June st and $100 after July 1st)
Each person needs to register on a separate registration form. Make sure you put the same team name on your forms, and a main contact/leader for your team so we can group you together. Payment is due when you register.
3. TRAIN!
Practice some ups on stairs, hills, wherever you can! When the snow clears from Mt. Baldy, head out there with a buddy and try out the hill for yourself! Feel free to check in at the chalet and say "Hello!" to any Mount Baldy staff when you're out there.
4. RACE DAY - SATURDAY, JULY 6TH.
